Karenni Students seek for basic needs support
KSU/18 October 2006Students in Karenni Refugee camp site #1 and 2 from Mae Hong Son, Northern Thailand, need support of basic needs such as candle, soap and clothing by the Karenni Students Union (KSU) assessment.
Despite of gathering information, KSU’s Activists Team was conducted survey in both camps with middle, high and post-high schools students in July 2006.
According to the Students Activists Team, they have interviewed overall 464 students in both camps. Among them, 389 students did not receive any support from any organizations, but 75 students received support from NGOs as Catholic Office Emergency Relief for Refugee (COERR).
“I really need candle for study, and soap and toothpaste for my personal hygiene” said Zin Zin, a high school student from camp #1.
Last year KSU did get some small funding from individual donor. As a result, about 300 students who separated from their parents or orphanage from both camps were supported.
But this school year, KSU doesn’t get any funding yet, so it is hard to provide for the basic needs of students. KSU itself is willing to help and support the students who are in need, but it is in the progress of struggling to get funding from the kindness heart donors and individual friends.
In July, one of the students from middle schools No (4) in camp#1 was dropped out of school because he needed to find income for his younger brothers and sisters who stay in camp parentless.
